its not just that I don't blog, but when I blog its not on this site.
since my work and my free time are all spent on Free Software and GNU/Linux I blog on my EGLUG Blog
maybe I should just mirror this stuff here to make this page look lively.
anyways my last piece of work is a huge messy document that tries to record my thoughts on how to use Free Software to make computers and computing more accessible and affordable to egyptians.
its a great big mess but its worth a read IMO, maybe one day I'll clean it up.
meanwhile I hope it will result in actual EGLUG activities.
Youssef found this.
seems like a normal story about some Plutonium leakage in Egypt, the real story is why its being promoted.
anyway the whole thing brought to memory some great Folkloric Nuclear stories.
once upon a time a medical research lab in Cairo was doing its spring cleaning and decided to get rid of some radioactive material, the thing was to be transported with other waste and garbage in an open truck.
Murphy being the most fundemental law in the universe the needle fell from the truck, and was later found by a farmer.
The guy thought he found a treasure and burried the thing in his house, few weeks later the whole family dies.
government officials assure us the rest of the village was not affected at all and everything is allright.
I've no reference for this story, will try to google someday, but I remember Khaled Habib did a great radio show about this whole fiasco which had everyone in the village dying while denying anything happened.
Once upon a time in the happy kingdom of Cairo University the great sages of the faculty of science recieved a shipment of radioactive material for their research needs, buerocracy being what it is it took time to figure out who has the 3ohda (property responsibility) of the stuff and where it should be stored.
while waiting for these things to be resolved the stuff was stored in cardboard boxes and stacked together in the corner of some passage, it is said that in the breaks between lectures studends used to sit on these boxes.
again no references, this story is told by mom, a professor in faculty of science, Cairo University.
ok I finally decided to give up on ever migrating our old phpwiki based website.
I never get the time to do it, and I keep delaying adding new content until its done, manal doesn't seem to be interested enough in this website to begin with.
so I'll just start from scratch. expect new content soon.
finaly manalaa.net is on its new home, and we're running drupal CVS (yes many things will be borked).
I'm migrating stuff from PHPWiki manualy so its taking quite sometime, as usual we'll never get around to doing the webpage properly, but at least this time we got lots of bandwidth and space.
we also decided to donate space and to help anyone with a worthy idea for a website, or anyone who seeks to publish speech that is censored in Egypt (even if we strongly disagree with it).
we started by hosting 20M the 20 March movement for change an Egyptian a decentralized leftists collective; here is hoping 20M helps the egyptian left get over its long history of problems and infighting.
Today is the International Day in Support of Torture Victims, we had a small demonstration in cairo today, this is probably the first anti-torture demonstration in ages and frankly it SUCKED although the people where very receptive to the topic, should I be happy that we finaly had a public demonstration about this? should I be angry at the bad organization? I probably have no right to complain alot since I didn't help in organizing at all.
Oh well check the Photos.
Egyptians are actually happy their monarch is sick, some of the slogans where against the ruling family, here is a clip in divx and mpg formats.
I may get around to writing a rant about why the demonstration sucked one day.
Its official, we started a ?NewEgyptianLug eglug, the fork was abit ugly but things cooled down now, this is a very exciting project, we're going to try to do things differently, very differently, we're aiming for a very dynamic ever changing website, for a very open and democratic process (almost anrchist even) and of course lots of fun.
When you recieve an email that starts with "Hello I'm still alive" in a serious tone; not to indicate that its been long time since the last email, its almost always an email from Palestine. Today we recieved an email from ?WaelZahab who is working in ?BrazilCamp in Rafah, he says the situation is very bad, he feels the world is too ?BoredWithTheOldNews to care. ?WaelZahab sent us a these BrazilCampLetters written by 13-14 years old kids living there, please spread them around.
Alaa finaly launched the M20Website, started work on a NewLinuxEgyptWebsite both based on the almost perfect DrupalCms.
Maybe we'll use DrupalCms for this page one day, we're too busy with exams at the moment though.
NastyMozillaBug finally fixed and its all because of Alaa :-P all one needs is a slashdot interview
SlashDotInterview turned out to be a great success, Alaa is a famous guy now, everyone loves him, this time there was almost no racism (we must have misjudged slashdotters then) and very few trolls even though we got 530+ comments. Alaa met wonderful people, made new friends, got invited to Orkut and we did not get slashdotted.
Past ?InstallFest ephuria inspired Alaa to write AlaasStoryWithLinuxEgypt, this turned out to be quite a long story, hopefully it will be edited one day to become more readable.
Yay Alaa is famous; slashdot is doing an interview with him http://interviews.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/05/05/1354234 .
Man look at the racist comments, we never could stomach slashdot, the trick ?MadFarmAnimalz tells us is to browse at +5!!!.
Anyway this is the first time we expose ourselves to racism (is this how it feels to be black, female, homosexual, jewish, copt, palestinian.... hell its probably even worse), but what scares us the most is how misinformed slashdotters are, maybe we should start a ?SlashDottersGuideToEgypt one day.
come to think of it this is probably a good idea, I doubt you can find a photo of an ?EgyptianBus or an ?EgyptianClassRoom on the web.
We where not organized, we did everything wrong, it was a great mess, it was the best day in my life, it couldn't have been better, the 1st ?LinuxEgypt ?InstallFest was a great success, we got around 3000 visitors, had a great time and we're completley burned up. ?InstallFest website @ http://festival.linux-egypt.org Photos @ http://home.linux-egypt.org/cgi-bin/show_photos.cgi?photos/festival/ The wiki where we organized everything @ http://linux-egypt.manalaa.net/index.php/MayInstallFest Communication with ?InstallFest visitors @ http://aquaehost.com/pipermail/linuxday_manalaa.net/ Slashdot report @ http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/05/02/1838225
Today I was googleing to see how visible is our ?InstallFest, one of the results was this ingenious example of ReverseSpam, I'm sure the poor irish lug now hates all egyptians. anyway this prompted me to start a MostStupidEgyptians page, Mr. ?IbrahimHassan is my first candidate, if darwin is to be believed he must be dead by now.
Ahh celebrated the ancient rites of ?ShamAlNesim by spending a couple of relaxing day @ the beach, no swimming weather but I managed to get a tan anyway. and for the first time in my life there was no competition over ?AlBatarekh Sham Al Nesim Photos
so we're finaly having an ?InstallFest in egypt. its an interesting experience to plan and organize a big event like this through a WikiWikiWeb, check http://linux-egypt.manalaa.net/index.php/MayInstallFest
1st of may at al Sakya cultural center. http://festival.linux-egypt.org
finaly gave up on ever doing the webpage thing, I'll use a WikiWikiWeb for the moment, maybe ?Manal has time to make us a theme.
set up a pilot LinuxEgyptWiki hopefully this will solve all ?LinuxEgypt problems and help me find the ?CureForCancerWonder
Went to Zagazig to give presentation for ?LinuxEgypt, finaly solved the mystery of the TwoSidesOfMohammedYousif .
We went to buy a new Digital Camera. prices in Egypt are so inflated the best we could get is a low end Sony Cybershot. Anyway back to Photo taking order.
you can see Photos from the ?M20Demonstrations in cairo here M20Protest2004 and here M20Protest2003 sorry for the bad quality my my digicam is borked, I'm probably buying a new one soon
